Easy Tunisian Crochet Stitch is one of the easiest and most popular Tunisian stitches. It creates a neat, woven texture and is perfect for scarves, dishcloths, blankets and more
Tunisian crochet is a technique between regular crochet and knitting. You work each row in two steps:
- Forward Pass
- Return Pass
The Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) is the easiest stitch and gives a beautiful woven texture.
What You Need
- Medium-weight yarn (Category 4 is great for beginners)
- Tunisian crochet hook (one size larger than regular hooks)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- double crochet half
- double treble crochet
- increiase in crochet
- Change Colours in Amigurumi
Step 1: Make the Foundation Chain
This is the starting base of your work.
Tunisian Crochet Stitch
- Make a slip knot.
- Chain any number of stitches (start with 10–12 chains for practice).
- Keep your chain flat and untwisted.
Pro Tip: Make your chains loose and even. This makes the first row easier.
Step 2: Forward Pass (FP)
In this step, you will pull up loops and keep them on the hook.
How to do it:
- Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop → leave it on the hook.
- Repeat: insert → yarn over → pull up a loop → leave it on the hook.
- Do this in every chain across the row.
Now you should have many loops on your hook.
That’s normal in Tunisian crochet!
This step closes the loops you created.
step 3: Return Pass (RP)
This step closes the loops you created.
How to do it:
- Yarn over and pull through ONE loop only.
- This creates the right edge.
- Yarn over and pull through TWO loops.
- Repeat: yarn over → pull through two loops
- Continue until one loop remains on the hook.
This remaining loop is the start of your next row.
step 4 Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS)
This is the main stitch you will repeat.
Where to insert the hook?
In Tunisian crochet, each stitch has vertical bars.
You insert your hook under the front vertical bar only.
How to do TSS:
- Insert your hook from right to left under the front vertical bar.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop → leave it on the hook.
- Repeat this for every vertical bar across the row.
You will again have a row full of loops.
tep 5: Return Pass (Every Row)
Always the same steps:
- Yarn over → pull through one loop
- Yarn over → pull through two loops at a time
- Repeat across the row
This completes a full Tunisian row
Step 6: Repeat the Rows
Repeat:
- Forward Pass (TSS)
- Return Pass
until your project reaches the height you want.
As you continue, you will see:
- vertical lines forming
- a clean, woven-looking texture
Perfect for beginners!
Step 7: Bind Off
To finish the last row neatly:
How to bind off:
- Insert your hook under each vertical bar (as if doing TSS).
- Yarn over.
- Pull through both loops on the hook (like a slip stitch).
- Repeat across the row.
- Cut yarn and weave in your ends.
