The double treble crochet stitch (also called double triple crochet or double treble) is one of the tallest stitches in crochet. It creates a long, open, airy fabric perfect for lace, shawls, doilies, summer tops, and decorative motifs.

If you already know double crochet (dc) or treble crochet (tr), learning the double treble will be simple — it’s the same logic but with more yarn overs.

what Is a Double Treble Crochet (dtr)?

A double treble crochet (also written as dtr or dtrc) is a tall stitch used in:

  • lace patterns
  • shawls
  • fans & shells
  • open airy designs
  • decorative edges

It is taller than:

  • dc (double crochet)
  • tr (treble crochet)

And has three yarn overs before inserting the hook

US Terminology

🔹 Step 1: Yarn over 3 times

Wrap the yarn around your hook three times.

This makes the stitch tall.

🔹 Step 2: Insert the hook

Insert your hook into the next stitch (or chain space).

🔹 Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop

You should now have 4 loops on your hook.

🔹 Step 4: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops

You now have 3 loops left.

🔹 Step 5: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops

Now 2 loops remain.

🔹 Step 6: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops

Now 1 loop remains.

🔹 Step 7: Yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops

Stitch complete!

Easy Practice Row (Beginner Exercise)

Chain 15
Row 1: dtr in 6th chain from hook, dtr across
Row 2: ch 5, turn, dtr in each stitch

This lets you practice even height

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

Too loose loops → uneven stitch
✔️ Keep loops the same height.

Gaps at the bottom of the stitch
✔️ Hold the yarn tighter while pulling up loops.

Twisting the chains
✔️ Make sure your base chain stays straight.

Treble Crochet vs Double Treble Crochet

Both stitches are tall, open stitches, but they have different heights, uses, and yarn-overs.

The main difference is height: double treble crochet (dtr) is one stitch taller than a treble crochet (tr), achieved by yarning over three times before inserting the hook, while a treble crochet involves yarning over twice. Treble crochet is a common stitch, whereas double treble crochet is a less common specialty stitch used for taller, looser, and more airy fabrics.
